| Cenotes
These
bodies of water in the rock of the peninsula are called
cenotes and three types exist, of which Xel-Há
has one, the "aguada" or "watered"
type. This type of cenote has a great diversity of flora
such as orchids and palms, besides fruit trees such
as the zapote or chicle tree from which gives us the
delicious zapote fruit and also the chicle from which
chewing gum is made. A bridge crosses the River Xel-Há,
winding a path through the blooming jungle, rocks and
caves, arriving at the entrance to two cenotes. The
crystalline waters of Cenote Paraiso and Cenote Aventura
are due to the subterranean rivers that flow through
them and also the false bottoms which allow little vertical
water circulation. |
| The
Caleta or Inlet The
Caleta is one of Xel-Há`s funnest spots, whether just drifting on the current
floating on an innertube, or going underwater with snorkel and fins to see the
many wonders of marine life. Xel-Há River flows into the ocean and is surrounded
by walls, piers and small beaches ideal for sunbathing, and to take a rest til
you jump back in the water again. The Wisconsin Glaciation caused the seas to
descend to their present level provoking a collapse in the roofs of the underground
rivers that formed the caleta of Xel-Há.

Navigating the River
Navigating
the Xel Ha River is an adventure not to be missed. This
river is fed by two freshwater springs and the subterranean
rivers that riddle the whole underworld of the Yucatán
Peninsula. While coming down the river you can observe
the phenomenon called "thermocline" in which
the less dense freshwater of the river mixes with the
dense salty sea water. This difference of density produces
an effect of separation between the different masses
of the water. Thousands of fish are all around you and
a great diversity of coral fossils plainly show the
history of its origins. |
| Turtles
In
the months from April to November, two species of turtle, the river turtle and
the loggerhead turtle, arrive on the beaches of Xel-Há to spawn. At nightfall
on certain days of the year, visitors may participate in letting the freshly hatched
turtles go to the sea. | | |
