BALL GAME:
 |
One of the purposes of the
park at Xcaret in to disseminate the cultural heritage
of the Mexican and Mayan peoples. At nightfall, the park
is transformed into a marvelous night show - the "tunkul",
the wooden drum, resounds in the jungle dusk, announcing
the prehispanic balllgame. Originating 3500 years ago
and found in an extensive part of Mesoamerica, this politico-religious
game between captured nobles and their victors is considered
a cosmic ritual metaphor - the players on earth deciding
the trajectory of the cclestial orbits of the stars, represented
by the ball. |
| Although the Spanish prohibited the ballgame and erradicated
it during the Conquest, it survived in a few places in
Mexico under the name of "Ulama." Today they
play this ancestral game at Xcaret. The new court is built
in a pure architectural style inspired by those in Monte
Alban, Oaxaca, and Copán, Honduras. Bouncing the
ball between the inclined banks, the objective is to put
the ball through the stone hoops embedded in the top of
the wall, but only using the hips! In this presentation
of the legendary game, Xcaret is rescuing and disseminating
a tradition of the milleniums that for most of us is only
remembered in the ruins of the many ballcourts found in
Mesoamerica. |

Today, in Xcaret, a demonstration
of this play can be witnessed ancestral. The court, new,
lights up a pure style arquitectónico inspired
in that of Mount Albán (state of Oaxaca) and in
that of Copán (Honduras). Upon the slopes, the
heavy one pelota of hule (4 kg) wheel and rebota: the
objective is passing it among the aros of stone empotrados
in its splits upper, using only the hip. Through this
presentation, Xcaret rescata and posts a tradition milenaria.
It collects life a play whose reality, to date, had been
limited for the majority of us to the vestigios of the
numerous courts disseminated by the territory mesoamericano.
