The
Mayans were the first inhabitants of the region. When
arriving the Spanish conquerors at the peninsula, the
territory of Quintana Roo was divided in several created
independent chieftainships after the fall of the Confederation
of Mayapán, in the year of 1194. The territory of the
municipality of Island Women belonged at that time to
the chieftainship of Ecab, whose population concentrated
in the zone of Conil and Catoche end, on the coast of
the Gulf of Mexico. By their natural resources and their
situation with respect to the rest of the Mayan world,
the main activities of Ecab were the fishing and the
commerce. For the inhabitants of Ecab, Isla Mujeres
was only a camping of agriculturists and recolectores
of salt, thus only exist small vestiges of the Mayan
civilization. The production of salt of Island Women
was important for all the peninsular region. In 1517
Francisco Hernandez of Cordova it arrived at Island
Women and Cabo Catoche.

charges throughout all the territory worked. In 1847
it exploded, in the center of the territory, the call
War of Chaste; the population yucateca in good part
emigrated towards Island Women, zone that stayed separated
from the conflict. |

In
1902 Porfirio Diaz it creates the territory of Quintana
Roo, being Isla Mujeres one of the original municipalities.
Its economy at that time was based on the sugar operation,
you leave, cotton and chicle that made agricultural
companies. Through the risky political life of the organization
during the present century, Island Women maintained
its identity, or outside like municipality or delegation.
It emphasizes the fact that between 1931 and 1934, lapse
in which was disintegrated the Territory of Quintana
Roo, Isla Mujeres stayed like national territory, prevailed
by a federal delegate, whereas the rest of the territory
megred to the neighboring states.

when Francisco Hernandez de Cordova berthed in the island
I find a small enclosure that contained feminine ídolos
with characteristic, which I originate that End was
called to him "Women". Another version affirms
that to the arrival of the first expeditionary Spaniards
to the island in 1517, the men of the place were fishing,
reason why inferred that the island was occupied single
by women.
One but asserts that the Mayan name of the island was
Ixchel (goddess of the fertility in the Mayans) because
it said that there the virgin young people before the
marriage were sent to obtain fertility and that their
childbirths did not undergo complications. However,
the accepted version more is first.
