The Mayans were the first inhabitants of the region. When arriving the Spanish conquerors at the peninsula, the territory of Quintana Roo was divided in several created independent chieftainships after the fall of the Confederation of Mayapán, in the year of 1194. The territory of the municipality of Island Women belonged at that time to the chieftainship of Ecab, whose population concentrated in the zone of Conil and Catoche end, on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. By their natural resources and their situation with respect to the rest of the Mayan world, the main activities of Ecab were the fishing and the commerce. For the inhabitants of Ecab, Isla Mujeres was only a camping of agriculturists and recolectores of salt, thus only exist small vestiges of the Mayan civilization. Origin of the Name
There are several versions about the origin of the name of Isla Mujeres.
