What To do? -> Sites of Interest

It is not necessary to be a diver to enjoy the beauty of underwater Cozumel. All along the western coast there are calm water sites where it is possible to swim with snorkel and mask, even right in front of the hotels. Cozumel is famous for its cruises that arrive daily, which make it easy for you to traverse the Caribbean Sea from here. You can board the only real submarine in Latin America, the Atlantis, which descends to 33 meters to give its passengers a panoramic vista of the underwater world.

Sites of interest on Cozumel are:

Paraíso Bajo is a coral reef that begins a little after leaving the lagoon towards the north and runs along the coast almost until it arrives at the TMS, initials for the Marine Terminal wharf of the Mexican South East in Spanish. There the maximum depth is 20 to 30 meters, the reef reaches a height that does not exceed 4 meters and one mile in length. Small caves and tunnels form the structure of the reef, the marine life is varied and abundant, it is common to find, for instance, all the family of parrotfish.

Chankanaab: Great knolls of chorale give the name "Bellboys" to this dive site. From a depth of 60 - 70 feet, these formations rise 25 feet above the white sandy bottom, inside of which hang gorgonia sponges and in some it is possible to find small "trees" of black chorale. The area is extensive and the grouper that is accustomed to rest inside the balls of coral unique to this area are known to pay a visit.

Tormentos: Famous for the eels and grouper that frequent it, the depth of 60 feet in the base of sand and up to 35 feet in the highest part of the reef. Advanced novices and will enjoy a visit to this site.

San Francisco: The first part of this place is the vertical wall with incrustations of chorale and great yellow tube sponges hanging into the abyss. The depth begins at 60 to 70 feet, with the best diving at 120 feet. The wall continues with a smooth inclination almost like green and shining grass, where sometimes it is possible to observe great manta rays. The third section is like a mountain range that at 70 to 80 feet is crisscrossed by tunnels that rise to a single sand platform of 40 feet. This last section is considered the best part of San Francisco and is compared with its famous neighbor, the reef of Santa Rosa.
