In the municipality of Othón P. Blanco the first occupants of the region were the Mayans itzáes, that they penetrated to the peninsula upon decaying the Classical civilization maya (320 to 987 d. C.), dominated Bacalar and Chetumal toward the year 950.

During that epoch the Confederation existed of Mayapán; after the fall of this in 1194, begins the call periodo of Mayapán. The tribe of the putunes dominated the region of Bacalar and Chetumal.


In the epoch of the arrival of the conquering Spaniards to the present territory of Quintana Roo, this was found fragmentado in cacicazgos, Uaymil (whose more important point was Bakhalal) and Chactemal that extended since the present population of Bacalar until New River, in Belice, the caciques of Chactemal they dominated to the of Uaymil.

In 1915, Payo Bishop, became the capital one of the territory. Among 1931 and 1935, the city decayed in consequence of the division of the territory with the neighboring companies, decreed by the federal Government; but to the reconstituirse this, the locality renews its growth, being installed there the powers of the government.

In 1936 the name of Payo Bishop is substituted for that of Chetumal. As of 1947 the Delegation of Payo Bishop, passes to be Othón P. Blanco.
